Today Amy and I had signed up to be responsible for Trondhjems Kajakk Klubb's (TKK) weekly Sunday paddle, and despite the frequent snow showers, we had a group of six who enjoyed paddling along the canal and up Nidelva. (Despite it being the 10th May, there was some snow briefly lying, even at sea level, this morning, and reports of 10 cm new snow just outside town) We were lucky with our timing, and enjoyed a sunny spell for our lunch by the cathedral on the way back downstream.
On the way back to Skansen, three of us decided to paddle in the fjord from the Hurtigbåtkia to Skansen, rather than follow the canal. With a brisk northwesterly there was quite significant and messy waves on the fjord. After sampling the clapotis by the Hurtigbåtkia for a minute, one of the members of the group decided that it was too much for him, so we beat a retreat back to the canal. As we say here "Vend i tide – det er ingen skam å snu" - turn back in time, it is no shame to turn around.
It was a bit of a shame to have to turn back, as I would have found the waves on fjord fun, but it was certainly the right call for the group. As a bonus for turning around, we found a pump floating in the fjord (not from our group).
Once back on land, all club boats and kit must be washed with soapy water to reduce CoVid risks - I bet they've never been so clean!
